Well, they are. And so is saying 'gnarly' and 'commune on a deeper level, dude' but no one will let me talk like that. So I find excuses to talk oddly.
Let's restate that.
Today in one of my songwriting classes they asked me how to put a melody to lyrics, and I told them the old organized trick. But then I was asked by one curious man (that reminds me a lot of Elvis as far as his singing goes) how I put melodies to my lyrics. Put on the spot, I had to be honest....
I say my lyrics to myself with an accent (usually British or Australian, mate).
It seems silly, but it helps me find the highs and lows of my melody and the rhythm of my speech. It also makes me less critical of myself because it's not my voice. Some people understood, others didn't. But they all thought it was 'gnarly'. So I've decided to post a song of mine for them using only my (horrible) British accent to demonstrate how it gives life and rhythm to the song.
Even if you aren't in my class, please enjoy!
